When Risk Becomes Strategy: A Story of Entering the Rental Business

Author: Miša Relić

A little over two and a half years ago, just as we were recovering from the post-COVID period, I made a decision that, at the time, felt quite risky.

From what could be described as a defensive position, I chose to make an offensive move.

I acquired the complete equipment inventory of a rental company I had been working with for years. After the owner passed away, the heirs decided to sell everything, as they had never been involved in the business. That left me facing a very clear choice: either I would continue sourcing equipment across Belgrade and Serbia for every Musicology Sessions concert, or I would take control of that part of the process.

I chose to take the risk, with Tijana’s concern, and her quiet support.

Partly through a loan, partly through my own funds, I stepped into a business that wasn’t entirely familiar to me at the time. Still, it wasn’t a blind move. The plan was clear: through our own production, the investment could be recouped within three to four years. What I couldn’t foresee was how things would evolve beyond our own projects.

Two and a half years later, the story has taken a positive, and somewhat unexpected direction.

We now stand behind collaborations with festivals such as Nišville, Arsenal Fest, and Ljubav, alongside a large number of concerts produced through Musicology Sessions and BitefArtCafe.

Everything we earned, we reinvested back into the equipment thoughtfully and with a long-term perspective, guided by a clear focus: quality, reliability, a comprehensive offering, and sustainable growth.

Today, we have a serious and carefully maintained inventory (special thanks to Antanas Labs), with a particular focus on keyboards. Alongside standard Nord, Yamaha, Roland, and Prophet models, we have developed a growing collection of vintage instruments that are increasingly in demand:

Hammond C3 & Leslie 147, Minimoog Model D, Moog Voyager, Hohner Clavinet D6, Vox Super Continental, as well as multiple Fender Rhodes electromechanical pianos.

At the same time, we are building strong partnerships with brands such as Tama Drums, Meinl Byzance, and Sabian, supported by a robust multi Yamaha drum setup, along with Pearl, Gretsch, and other drum brands.

The point?

Sometimes, the things you do to protect yourself grow into something far more meaningful.

For me personally, this has become a way to stay close to music, even when life takes you into different industries.

And yes, life really does write novels.
